Overshoot Day 2025: The Day Business Must Truly Wake Up

A date on the calendar that should make us reflect, discuss, and act.

Every year we mark a date that should make us stop and think.
It’s Overshoot Day — the day when humanity exhausts all the natural resources that Earth can regenerate in a year.

In 2025, globally, it will fall at the end of July.

In Italy, it has already passed.
On May 6th, to be exact.

From the next day onward, we live on credit — withdrawing from an account that is already deep in the red.

But who creates this ecological debt?

Not just citizens.
Businesses are at the centre of the problem — and can be at the centre of the solution.

If you’re in the market, you’re not outside the problem.

Today, Italy would need almost 3 planets to sustain its lifestyle.
And the private sector is responsible for a massive share of that impact.

But companies are not only part of the problem:
they are the most powerful lever we have to push Overshoot Day forward.

This is no longer about “doing something for the environment”—
it is about rethinking business models in a world changing at high speed.

Which industries consume the most? And who is already innovating?

To reverse the trend, we must focus on the most impactful — and most strategic — sectors:

1. Energy

Responsible for 73% of global emissions (IEA 2024).
Innovation ranges from smart grids to green hydrogen.
Enel, for example, has surpassed 60 GW of installed renewable capacity.

2. Construction

Responsible for 37% of global emissions.
Here we talk about NZEB buildings, urban regeneration and decarbonised materials.
Italian SMEs participating in the Superbonus Green have already reduced consumption by up to 40%.

3. Agro-industry

Consumes 70% of global freshwater.
But regenerative agriculture is transforming the sector.

  • Barilla reduced the water footprint of its durum wheat by 30% through Carta del Mulino
  • Maccarese introduced precision farming, cutting fertiliser use by 40%

4. Fashion

Accounts for 10% of global emissions.
Solutions? Alternative fabrics, circularity, digital innovation.

Orange Fiber (Sicily) turns citrus waste into textiles now seen on international runways.

This is not theory: here’s how we can actually move Overshoot Day forward

According to the Global Footprint Network:

+29 days if we doubled the productivity of urban infrastructure

Examples:

  • Milan is working on the 15-minute city, reducing traffic and emissions
  • In Bolzano, district heating (powered by biomass and organic waste) covers 50% of buildings
  • Bologna’s Green Building Campus cut energy consumption by 42% in two years

+15 days if regenerative agriculture were adopted at scale

Examples:

  • Barilla revolutionised durum wheat cultivation
  • Nespresso planted 2.5 million trees in supplier fields
  • Maccarese improved yields and reduced inputs through rotations and tech

Innovation pays — for the planet and for business

You can only communicate what you actually practice.
Sustainability is a commitment, not a claim.

Innovating means:

  • Reducing regulatory and reputational risks
  • Attracting ESG investments
  • Increasing efficiency, savings, and resilience

No individual choice will save the world —
but collective behaviours can create critical mass.

More data from the Global Footprint Network:

  • +13 days if we halve food waste
  • +17 days if we cut meat consumption by half
  • +11 days if we live in more compact and efficient cities

Our habits are not neutral.
When multiplied, they genuinely move the date.
Every choice — mobility, food, home, energy — is leverage.

Every day gained is a competitive advantage

More days mean more time to innovate, grow, and stay relevant.

#MoveTheDate: From awareness to action

Knowing the problem isn’t enough.
We must shift from diagnosis to transformation.

#MoveTheDate is a global campaign to push back our breach of planetary limits — one day at a time.

Every solution — policy, technology, behaviour — buys us time.
And every extra day is a piece of the future saved.

This is where real leadership shows

Want to make a real difference?

Sit at the tables where change is built:
supply chain coalitions, business networks, pilot projects, climate-tech startups.

Don’t stay outside the rooms where the future takes shape.

A real Call to Action

If you are a company:

  • Measure your impact, starting from the most energy-intensive processes
  • Design to regenerate, not just to mitigate
  • Build strategic partnerships with innovators

If you are a citizen:

  • Choose companies that make courageous decisions
  • Participate, vote, speak up — every voice counts

If you are an institution:

  • Support companies that truly innovate
  • Enable ecosystems, not just regulations

#MoveTheDate is not just a hashtag or a claim.
It is a strategy for staying in the market — without exiting the future.
